i just picked my `75 vette up from the shop to have the elderbrock carb

adjusted(its too rich) and the mechanic had the vacuum hose from the

distributor switched from one that sucks when you give it the gas to a

vacuum inlet on my carb that sucks all the time. when i asked him about

it he said a distributor with points had it the way with a inlet that

sucks when you give it the throttle but mine with electronic ignition is

suppose to have the vacuum all the time. is this right? if so, why

wouldn`t it be okay to connect it to the intake behind the carb?

my friend that runs a parts store thought both distributors needed the

hose to the carb inlet that sucks when gas is applied. who is right?

thanks for any info.

A "port that sucks when gas applied" is known as ported vacuum.

It was used as an emissions feature to retard advance at idle (it made

hotter exhaust and thus lower pollutants).

Full vacuum at idle will provide better throttle response and torque at low

RPMs.

It should have high vacuum at idle and little to no vacuum when you raise

the engine RPM. So it should be connected to a port below the throttle

plates. You can tell if it`s working properly by connecting a timing

light and checking for advance while raising the engines RPM. It should

be in full advance by around 3000 RPM.
